Utilizing Space in Your Home to Create More Storage

It can be an obstacle to find enough storage space in a home. It seems that we can never find enough space to combat the ever-growing amount of stuff we need to store. Ideally we would all have homes with endless amounts of storage space, but that’s a tall order. Increasingly, instead of moving to larger homes or adding additions to their homes people are finding ways to utilize the space they have.

Additional storage can be created wherever there is unused space, no matter how unique the size or shape. Walk around your house and take notice of wall space that is unused, small or large nooks that are currently not being utilized, or any other space that is currently being used as storage but could be organized better.

Take a look at the pictures below for some ideas:

Traditional Family Room by New York Photographers Rikki Snyder-

Traditional Bedroom by Chester General Contractors ColeBuilt

There are endless ways to increase your storage space and create unique and beautiful solutions for your home. Some examples include:

Look up! Try and find additional space above you where you could build shelves or other types of storage units. Most homes do not have anything placed above eye-level. This leaves a lot of unused storage space.

-Look for nooks and crannies that could house storage solutions: under your stairs, around walls, in window seats, etc. Classy Closet’s custom storage solutions can be made to fit into any area. Utilizing the unique shapes of your home can give you more storage.

-Create custom-built beds that have storage solutions under them. A Classy Closets designer can help you to create a bed with storage drawers underneath.

-Consider a Murphy-bed. Murphy beds are great for utilizing your space and creating an extra bedroom when you need it. Classy Closets has a complete line of Murphy-beds which can be found on our website under our Products tab.

As you contemplate your home storage solutions, take time to examine your needs and wants. Likely the storage solutions you create are going to be in your home for a while. Create custom storage solutions that match the design aesthetic of your home. Be prepared to show pictures and ideas to your designer and explain your goal. At Classy Closets, no custom project is too difficult. We would love to help you create more storage for your home. After all, that’s what we are all about: “Life. Organized.”

Walk-In Closet Organization

Brown_Pearwood_Master_with_Dresser

Here at Classy Closets we want to make sure your closet is the best it can be. A tidy closet not only improves your environment by keeping you more organized but it saves you money by giving you a chance to take inventory of what you already have. Here are some steps and advice from two of our designers on how to achieve an organized closet:

Cleaning Out Your Closet:

Do a little spring cleaning:

  • take everything out of your closet so you can see what you have

Evaluate the items:

donation

  • Have you worn it lately? A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t worn it in the last year, get rid of it!

  • Can any items be moved to the garage? Closets should be for clothes, garages are for storage. Check out this post for organizing your garage.

Putting Items Back in Your Closet:

After you’ve gone through everything and before you start putting it back ask yourself a few questions:

  • What do you envision?

Is your goal to have more space freed up in your bedroom and to eliminate excess furniture like dressers? Do you need more hanging space in your closet? More drawers? More shelves?

If so, maybe it’s time to think about a closet redesign. Our designers are experts in helping you maximize your closet space and working with your organizational goals. If you just simply want to reorganize the closet you have, here are some simple ways to do so:

  • Color Coordinate:

Keep  all your clothing items separated by their color. This makes picking out  outfits and matching a whole lot easier.

  • Folded, Hung or in a Drawer:

ft_hangvfold_l

Anything that can’t be folded, like socks, lingerie, or swimsuits, should be put in a drawer. Other items like shirts and pants you will need to decide whether you prefer them hung or folded on a shelf

  • Establish a rhythm:

Have  items in a left to right order: Undergarments/socks, pants/shirts,  belts/ties, shoes

  • Keep similar items together—all shoes in one place, pants, shirts, etc.

  • Use organizing assistance:

Have  a designated jewelry drawer with separators for necklaces, rings, and bracelets to keep them untangled

Use drawer dividers to separate different colored socks or to keep socks and underwear separated in the same drawer

Find a nice belt or tie rack to keep them all in one place and neatly hung

If you like to have your shoes stored in the box, take a Polaroid picture  and paste it to the outside of the box so you know what shoes are in them

  • Have a hamper inside the closet to keep dirty clothes all in one place and off  the floor

Maintaining Your Organization:

Once everything is put back in your closet and is neatly arranged, make it your goal to keep it that way.

  • One For One

Every time you buy a new item, get rid of an old one. This helps eliminate clutter and save space

  • Empty the Hamper

hamper

This one is simple. Do your laundry so clothes don’t pile up and clutter your  closet

  • Keep Seasonal Items Away

Just about every closet has a corner. Use those corners to switch out the seasonal items that aren’t in use.

Organizing Men’s Closets

men's closetWhile closet organization typically appeals more to women than men, it is still just as applicable. However, organization for men is different than it is for women. Fawn Peterson, a designer here at Classy Closets, chimes in on how she designs men’s closets.

She explains that men like to keep their work clothes separate from their everyday clothes. Unlike women, who can wear most work shirts on a daily basis, men don’t ordinarily wear button up, long sleeved shirts just to lounge around the house. When designing a closet, she likes to create a space for work shirts, pants, and jackets, making it easier for him to match shirts and pants with a quick glance. She also places a tie rack in the same section so it’s easy for him to match his ties to his outfits. For his everyday clothes, she places a shelf for t-shirts directly above his jeans, which makes for an effortless, fast weekend outfit. Fawn also recommends a shelf for shoes and hats to keep the floor space neat and uncluttered.

Color coordination is not as important to men as it is to women. Women benefit from the “rainbow placement” because it makes matching outfits easier. Men, on the other hand, keep their white and colored dress shirts together and their suits and jackets near them for easy matching, but don’t bother with coordinating other shirts within the closet.

After establishing this method of organization, maintaining the cleanliness of your closet becomes much easier. You will no longer have to search for items in your closet because you’ll already know where they are!

Don’t already have shelves in your closet? Classy Closets can help you make the most of your closet space and can give it a refined, masculine feel! Visit or contact your local showroom for more information!

For book lovers, a personal library is a must. Unfortunately, an in-home library can be difficult for homeowners to attain, as there is little room for libraries in most homes. However, closets provide a great place to create your own library or book nook. They give you a place to store your books without taking up too much space and make your home more interesting and inviting.

To begin, decide on your closet. Which size would best suit your home and family?

A walk-in closet is the largest and most versatile of options. As the closet with the most room, it provides space to convert it into a book nook instead of just a library. After painting and installing the shelving, consider adding an interesting chair and lighting to make it more comfortable and to provide a space to get away from the distractions of life.

For reach-in closets, you can either add French doors or remove the doors completely. By adding French doors to a reach-in closet, it can instantly make the library/book nook look more interesting and can display your books in a nicer, cleaner way. However, removing the doors completely allows for a more open feel, allowing you the opportunity to add an interesting chair, thus giving you the opportunity to turn it into more of a book nook.

Finally, the linen/coat closet enables you to use less room for the same desired effect. It is the most convenient option for a closet library, albeit the smallest. You can easily clean out a linen closet to make room for your books. Add a French door with glass inserts to show off your collection and voilĂ !

After you’ve decided on the closet, start thinking about paint colors. Adding color to the back wall or even all the walls can drastically change the atmosphere. Whether it is a walk-in closet or a linen closet, atmosphere is everything. It can transform an area into a place you always want to be.

After paint comes the most important step: shelving. Depending on the rest of your design and what you want the tone of your library to be, think about whether you want reclaimed wood or regular wood. Lori Hamblin, a designer here at Classy Closets, gives an excellent alternative to reclaimed wood. Because reclaimed wood is not as durable as regular wood, Lori suggests using melamine instead, which can come in a reclaimed wood style.

For French doors, go to Home Depot or Lowe’s and take a look at the styles and colors of French doors they have there. If you can’t find anything that works, consider looking up your local mill shop

Salt Lake City Classy Closets - Classy Closets Utah

The garage is probably one of the most missed places while cleaning. Between all the toys, bikes, scooters, and cars, the garage is also one of the messiest and chaotic. Take back control of your garage by using some simple organizational tips!

Start by de-cluttering your garage. Take out old toys and donate them to charity. Throw out all the trash that has accumulated throughout the years. This will diminish the mess and make the task seem much less daunting.

After de-cluttering, it’s time to start organizing! Start by utilizing the wall space. Hang up pegboards on the walls to house your tools. Use hooks or screwdriver racks to hang them on the pegboards. This will keep your tools off the workbench, leaving more room for work to be done.

Next, hang up shovels, rakes, and weed wackers on the wall with heavy-duty hooks. This keeps them from being knocked over or leaning against the wall, not to mention it gives you a clear, open walking space.

Hang a bike rack or hook on the wall to make more room for cars.

Finally, keep basketballs, footballs, and baseballs off the ground with a ball rack.

For a finishing touch, change the bulbs in your garage lighting to make a clean, open feeling and give the door a good scrubbing!

One of the most satisfying spring cleaning tasks is cleaning out the closet to make way for warm-weather clothes. Unfortunately, this can be a daunting undertaking, especially if you’ve let the clutter build all winter.  In a nutshell, here is a step-by-step guide to cleaning out your closet.

  1. Straighten it up. Throw away trash and hang everything up so it’s tidy to start.

  2. Remove everything from your closet and lay it out on your bed in groupings: pants, dresses, etc.

  3. Clean your closet: Dust, vacuum and mop.

  4. Sort the clothes into four piles: Keep, save for when they fit, donate, and toss or recycle.

  5. Hang up everything in the “keep” pile. Organize them by type: pants, shirts, dresses, etc.

  6. Return shoes and accessories to the closet.

  7. Dispose of your cast-offs right away. Take the boxes to the donation center and throw away or recycle clothes that are too worn to be donated.

If your closet still feels crowded and inefficient, consider a serious closet organization makeover withCustom Closets Direct. We can create the perfect system for your closet to keep it tidy and your clothes easily accessible.
