Organizing Men’s Closets

Posted on June 20, 2013 by Bob LeSueur at Classy Closets Corporate.

While closet organization typically appeals more to women than men, it is still just as applicable. However, organization for men is different than it is for women. Fawn Peterson, a designer here at Classy Closets, chimes in on how she designs men’s closets.

She explains that men like to keep their work clothes separate from their everyday clothes. Unlike women, who can wear most work shirts on a daily basis, men don’t ordinarily wear button up, long sleeved shirts just to lounge around the house. When designing a closet, she likes to create a space for work shirts, pants, and jackets, making it easier for him to match shirts and pants with a quick glance. She also places a tie rack in the same section so it’s easy for him to match his ties to his outfits. For his everyday clothes, she places a shelf for t-shirts directly above his jeans, which makes for an effortless, fast weekend outfit. Fawn also recommends a shelf for shoes and hats to keep the floor space neat and uncluttered.

Color coordination is not as important to men as it is to women. Women benefit from the “rainbow placement” because it makes matching outfits easier. Men, on the other hand, keep their white and colored dress shirts together and their suits and jackets near them for easy matching, but don’t bother with coordinating other shirts within the closet.

After establishing this method of organization, maintaining the cleanliness of your closet becomes much easier. You will no longer have to search for items in your closet because you’ll already know where they are!

Don’t already have shelves in your closet? Classy Closets can help you make the most of your closet space and can give it a refined, masculine feel! Visit or contact your local showroom for more information!

It is a day and age where home owners want to make the most out of their square footage. Rooms no longer have to be defined as "offices", "laundry rooms", "closets", or "dens". People want more. Homes that utilize space actually have an increased property value which is extremely important with the current struggling housing market. This is not a new idea. Historic architect Frank Lloyd Wright came up with the concept of an "open" home nearly 100 years ago. These open homes were extremely popular near the beginning of the 20th century and now, as we close out the first decade of the 21st, these open homes are making a resurgence.

Storage is key for these "open" homes. Utilizing closet space and other storage facilities can eliminate the need for certain expensive furniture such as dressers and cabinets. There are even ways to cut down on the total square feet needed for your home. Having the option of wallbed in a home office can eliminate the need for a guest room. Your home is littered with places where good ideas can help maximize space. When you really look for ways to cut down on costs you can see the benefits of having the amenities of an "open" home.

Investing now can save you money in the future. Renovating your current home or adding some of the features of an "open" home to your new house can truly be beneficial, especially if you are planning to sell your home in the current market and economy.

Closets and Spaces - Organization in Salt Lake City

Your options for designing a closet are now nearly as wide as your choices for furnishing your house. It used to be that all a closet got were poles, hooks and shelves. Today, a closet’s custom mill work and visual finishes are as sophisticated as any high-end kitchen, bath or even retail store. In new home construction, if you don't say anything to a contractor, you'll get a basic "pole and shelf" setup: a single pole with a fixed shelf above it. Then it's up to you to customize the closet interior. Typically built and painted on-site, this is the least expensive way to go. The next upgrade includes multiple poles and shelves of varying lengths and heights to accommodate different types of garments.

Princesss Closet! Custom Closets Utah

As everyone knows the princess only deserves the best. Even when it comes down to her closet. This little girls closet was painted pink making the white really pop out matching the door and molding. The closet was built to grow as the girl does, because we all know time flys. Classy Closets added double hang across the back wall and some long in the front right corner. While at the moment she can fit five to six pairs of shoes on a shelf, a women would be able to fit four on a shelf. Not only does she have hanging and two towers for shoes and folded clothes but she also has two white baskets and a chrome swivel belt rack.

People often ask about which is “the best closet system”.   As the owner of the Classy Closets in Salt Lake City, I am a little biased, however I would like to offer a discussion that will help anyone decide for themselves which is the best closet system.

When looking at custom closets, or custom storage systems, there is a lot to consider and the most important  issue is what you, the customer, really wants….  Whether I think my system is the best, or another company thinks theirs is the best, is totally meaningless.    You decide what is most important!  Its all about You.

Many customers want a storage system that functions really well in their day to day life, so functionality is their highest priority.  Therefore, the best storage system for this type of person would be the one that best suits their day to day needs, which can only be accomplished by using a professional that works with you extensively to understand your specific needs, and then translates that into a custom system that is designed very specifically for You!.  Today, there are so many design features that can be included to make your custom storage system be all it can be that you need a professional that is capable of discussing each of the relevant features with you  and how it will improve the functionality of your storage system.  This professional at Classy Closet is called a Design Consultant.  The average person can go on-line and do a closet system layout from a DIY supplier and some can even install the system themselves.  It will look good, and appear to be a custom storage system.  Is it the best?  That’s not very likely.  The average person doesn’t know enough about closet system design to really make it work well, nor do they know much about the features that should be included to make it THE BEST!

Classy Closets's Design Consultant can give you the best chance of achieving a custom storage system that is THE BEST when looking at functionality.  The fact is that Classy Closets' Designers spend two times, three times, even four times the amount of time of most other companies.  The average storage system company spends 30 minutes at the home.  This is no where close to the amount of time it takes to understand the customer needs adequately to design The Best Functioning Closet for You.  That is why we spend the time – so you end up being very satisfied.

No matter what custom closet system you choose to evaluate, make sure they adequately work to truly understand your specific needs so that you get The Best Closet Company system.

Closet Tips:

To clear the center of the garage so you can walk through it, sort everything in the garage into four piles:

Trash — any item in your garage that you have not used in years and that does not hold any useful or worthy sentimental value. And if it’s broken, most definitely trash it. You will not fix it later

Charity donations — items that aren’t broken but are in too good of shape to trash and can be used by someone else

Items belonging elsewhere — return items belonging elsewhere to your interior rooms or to the person from whom you borrowed them

Items to remain in garage
